Kit Money Quests

Helping improve the financial capability of kids in Australia

An App Preview Frame of KangaZoo, a mobile simulation game developed by PentaQuest and Chaos Theory.
Kit is an earning-and-learning, mindfully-spending, money-mastering app for kids built by CommBank. The pocket money app features a prepaid card and lets kids Earn it, Stack it, Spend it and most importantly, Learn it!

Kit approached us to help co-create the first iteration of their gamified learning platform. This 'Moneyverse' included quizzes and minigames, all to help enhance learning retention and promote real-world behaviours.

We were presented with

The Challenge

Kit wanted to leverage gamification to evolve the educational content in their app and make learning about money fun and engaging for kids.

This called for specialised gamification expertise that could work around an accelerated timeframe. It also demanded a highly collaborative approach to ensure the seamless integration of game mechanics into their existing app.

That became

The Solution

Collaborative Design

Since key features of the Kit app were already well-established, we focused on a collaborative design to elevate their existing app experience and take their learning content to the next level. We actively facilitated workshops, communicated through integrated Slack channels, and arranged regular stand-up meetings across both teams.

By working closely with their Game Director, Learning Designer, Engineers and UX/UI Designers, we ensured a symbiotic exchange of knowledge, allowing us to leverage their experience while contributing our own to create a gamified learning experience that was both fun and effective.

Dynamic Content Systems

Our focus on designing dynamic content systems was to ensure sustained engagement and allow for flexibility with future content expansion. We designed reusable game mechanics, such as a dynamic dialogue and animation system, allowing quests to be created quickly.

Our development support ensured the timely delivery of the Hubworld level selector (Kit’s Brainframe), the first Money Quest script with a minigame, designs, animations, and sound effects, to create a fun and interactive game experience for kids.

Secondly, our team designed and developed a player avatar system including over 70 avatar items to make kids active participants in the story. Items included a range of garments, hats, accessories and assistive technology to foster inclusivity, with a keen focus on diversity and representation. Avatar items are rewarded to players when they complete Money Quests, making the wardrobe and customisation mechanics central to the experience.

The Power of Narrative

Recognising the potent combination of storytelling and learning outcomes, our approach leveraged the power of narrative to create an immersive educational experience.

Our teams conceptualised a vibrant Quantum computing-inspired world that seamlessly blended real-world science with imaginative storytelling. This thematic choice allowed us to explore surreal and exciting concepts and grounded the narrative in the educational content, providing a perfect balance between engagement and learning.
